When life with Jayni's violent-tempered father becomes too frightening to cope with, Jayni, her mum and her little brother Kenny are forced to escape in the middle of the night. Slipping out of the house unseen, travelling up to London by train and checking into a hotel – it's almost like playing an elaborate game. They even make up false identities to protect their secret, and Jayni becomes the glamorous-sounding Lola Rose. But when money runs out and reality bites, what will they do next?

Critic reviews

'A natural storyteller ... compulsive reading.' (The Guardian)
'Optimism and despair come in equal parts in Wilson's child-centred contemporary dramas.' (The Oxford Times)
'A truly great read.' (Yorkshire Post)
'I loved this book. It is honest and sensitive and a really quick read – that's because you'll need to keep turning the pages to find out what happens to Lola Rose, and Kendall, and her mum ... highly recommended.' (Reading Matters)

definitely for more mature listeners, there's a lot of emotional topics but one of my favourite Jacqueline books! really touched me! it's a story of resiliance and taking chances!

very emotional!

I think that the story is very good, just maybe Jacqueline Wilson shouldn't write about cancer, even though it makes the plot more real. I don't think writing about dying will really be best for children, it might scare them. Otherwise amazing story!

Great, some stuff doesn’t make sense but overall 9/10, it probably relates to some situations, but not really, worth reading 👍😀

i loved this book from the first chapter to the last! it is definitely one of my favourites and i will definitely listen to it again.

i would recommend this book for 10+ as there is some rude content and some sad bits and violence too.
my favourite character is auntie babra because she was so nice and kind and friendly!
i think the narrator was really good and her voices were spot on.
