At the dawn of the nineteenth century, two very different magicians emerge to change England's history. In the year 1806, with the Napoleonic Wars raging on land and sea, most people believe magic to be long dead in England-until the reclusive Mr Norrell reveals his powers, and becomes a celebrity overnight.

Soon, another practicing magician comes forth: the young, handsome, and daring Jonathan Strange. He becomes Norrell's student, and they join forces in the war against France. But Strange is increasingly drawn to the wildest, most perilous forms of magic, straining his partnership with Norrell, and putting at risk everything else he holds dear.

So refreshing to hear a story narrated with such excellence. The novel itself is refreshingly original.

I have read this book a number of times, but to hear it read aloud reminds me of just how complete and detailed are characters and story told. Susanna Clarke is to be praised for this and the Audible audiobook does it proud.

Magical Mystery!

I’m not easily impressed by writing style, but Susanna Clarke has done a tremendous job. I loved the performance Simon Pebble brings to the tale as well, and look forward to more audiobooks from both.

Impressive writing style

The world-building and writing style are fantastic, as is the narration. The story is incredibly slow to get going and really takes most of the book for anything to particularly happen; not necessarily a criticism but it has to be what you are after.

Great performance, beautiful prose, slow story
