Summary

Librarian Syd Murphy flees the carnage of a failed marriage by accepting an 18-month position in Jericho - a small town in the Appalachian Mountains of Virginia. Her plans to hide out and heal her wounds fall by the wayside as she gets drawn into the daily lives of the quirky locals. She becomes fast friends with Maddie Stevenson, the enigmatic physician who has returned to the backcountry community to take over her late father's medical practice. Together they learn that life and love can have as many twists and turns as a country road.

As a heterosexual woman, I was disappointed to find I had inadvertently purchased a book with a lesbian theme. I read the first few chapters and became increasingly unconomfortable. Obviously, I will not purchase any more of Miss McMan’s books.

I Wish I Had Been Warned

This is a LONG book by many standards BUT it is worth the listen. The characters are complex and interesting, even the wee lassie that keeps falling over every time she sees Maddie. My partner said it was not her cup of tea, but I loved the language, the subtle turns of phrase, and the use of complex sentences. Some say it was too arty but the story had such a rich language that sometimes I had to look up the dictionary!

A real find A strange little story but a lovely o

The narrator spoilt this book for me unfortunately. I think if I read the physical copy I would have enjoyed it more.
Her female characters all sounded the same (and the same as the narrator parts), and her male characters also all sounded the same. The one good voice she did was the kid. She made the characters all sound in their 50s, which really threw me. I couldn't think of them as sexy even though the text kept saying they were lol. I kept thinking they maybe are in their 50s, but it took me over half way through the book to learn that Maddie was actually 34. Their older names didn't help... Maddie and Margaret (Syd). The narrator had this annoying way of saying some sentences, where her intonation sounded more like she was reading out a list rather than a person having a chat, this usually happened when Maddie was asking a question. Add that to a slow, low southern USA twang... Nope. I struggled with it. It took me to around 80% through the book to finally think of speeding it up by 20%, and I managed the rest of the book better.
Ok enough about the narration.
The story was fine, but definitely too long. It took something like 13 hours for the 2 main protagonists to finally kiss. After that the book was filled with "I love you"s. The sex scenes were 9pm watershed, rated PG13... which was fine for the most part. BUT... after 13 hours to kiss and another bunch of hours to go further... that build up kind of fell flat when not much happened once they did go there. Am I being shallow about this? Probably lol.
The entire last 4 hours of the book could have been left out.
It's a shame the narrator blew it for me or I'd consider the next installment, but I honestly can't put myself through Maddies voice again. I actually thought the book, with the name Jericho and synopsis, was set in the mid west... cowboys etc lol. Imagine my surprise when a car was mentioned right at the start! lol.
It's a 3.5 from me.

The narrator ruined the book for me

What a tremendous book. I have read it three times and still love it. The characters, their stories, the touching beauty in the depiction of each character and the humour make the work a feast. The performance by Christine Williams is completely astounding. Thank you so very much. I have listened to all the McMan books on Audible and keep coming back to the Jericho series, but as with all of this author’s books, she peoples them with characters one wants to stay with and meet again and again. Thank you.

A glorious whole
