About this listen
Politicians are consistently voted the least trusted professional group by the UK public. They've recently become embroiled in scandals concerning sexual harassment and expenses. Every year, they introduce new legislation that doesn't do what it sets out to achieve - often with terrible financial and human costs. But, with some notable exceptions, they are decent, hardworking people doing a hugely difficult and demanding job.
In this searching examination of our political class, award-winning journalist Isabel Hardman tries to square this circle. She lifts the lid on the strange world of Westminster and asks why we end up with representatives with whom we are so unhappy. Filled with forensic analysis and revealing reportage, this landmark and accessible book is a must-listen for anyone who wants to see a future with better government.

The author coming from her work as a journalist inside the system and not part of the legislative process I felt was ideally placed to take a distanced view of what is wrong with the system and the people selected as MP’s who are generally unrepresentative of the people who elected them to Westminster. It also highlighted what these people who put themselves forward for election have to go through personally and financially even before they are selected by their party and then they may not even get elected. How little time there is for scrutiny of legislation and are these people we elect good legislators. The author did come up with some good suggestions on improving things but sadly I feel we are a long way from this and if the culture at Westminster highlighted as one of the biggest issues does not change then I am not sure where we will go as a country & society. I am glad I purchased this book and well worth the time listening, you may not agree with the authors point of view or indeed my review….one thing is certainly not surprising is that not many people within the voting public would want to be an MP.
Informative and well performed.
