A young mage and her dragon must battle the darkest magic

All her life, Winnie has dreamt of being a mage. But when her grandmother threatens to pull her out of school, Winnie needs to prove herself to the Fairspell Magic Academy, and fast! When she's chosen to travel with a delegation of mages to the capital of Fantis, she sees her chance.

But Winnie's determination gets her mixed up in a mystery that threatens all magic in the kingdom. Soon, she finds herself imprisoned alongside a fierce dragon named Kygo, tormented by dangerous experiments that mix dragon and human sorcery. And making Winnie's own powers become erratic and dangerous.

Winnie and Kygo must band together to escape the clutches of evil, and save Winnie's fellow mages before it's too late. And if they fail, the ancient war between Fantis and Destia will reignite.

This is the fourth in the Fairspell academy series and starting here will spoil some of the previous books as some outcomes are revealed. Winnie is our strong, female student lead character who wants to develop her mage skills despite already having been a key factor in undoing the malign archmage's spells on leaders in Destia. She is included in a peace delegation sent to Fantis to help in discovering how the sickness legacy from the archmage can be undone. The uneasy peace between the two nations stoked into war by the evil archmage is repeatedly threatened as sabotage and betrayal abound. Winnie is personally threatened and harmed by the faction yearning to perpetuate the archmage's dominance over others. However, this experience changes her and she rescues a dragon defender. She mixes dragon and mage skills, thus the title. I don't want to give too much away, but I did find it a satisying ending whilst leaving the story open for further development.

Isabella Tugman does an excellent job in rendering the voices with appropriate emotion and tone. I was impressed by the ability to give us distinctive male voices.
