About this listen

British organised crime has changed beyond all recognition over the last five years. Youth violence, the drug trade and rising levels of gun crime are rarely out of the news. Beginning on the troubled streets of the inner cities, Gang Land takes its readers on a journey up through the underworld hierarchy until it finally reaches the very highest levels, occupied by shadowy ‘Mr Big’ characters.

"Shocking ... Fascinating and slightly scary reading...." ( Sun)

The book is a bit of a meander through some seemingly unconnected insights into gang culture generally but Tony Thompson clearly knows his stuff and it is always an interesting subject matter. However, the narration, while for the most part pitched correctly, suffers massively from the accents that are affected throughout. The geordie hamsters are the best of a bad bunch but for god’s sake, the Indian, West Indian and African accents are a bit like non French versions of Rene artois’s accent in allô allô.

Good story, terrible narration

Narrator attempts various accents.... all quite poorly. A book without direction. A total meander that isn't a bad listen but not recommendable.

really meh

Some middle age bloke trying to talk like a teenage gangster. 3 chapters in and I can't listen to anymore - awful.

Narration ruins it!

Enjoyable account of the jockeying for control of the criminal subculrure. Interesting to hear the early chapters about gangs, their recruiting mechanism and how far people go just to avoid beng a.victim through their own meting out of violence to thei rivals. Yep worth hearing. 7/10
