Summary

The funny, heartbreaking, wonderfully told story of love, family and overwhelming loss which led Emily Dean to find hope and healing in the dog she always wanted.

Growing up with the Deans was a fabulous training ground for many things: ignoring unpaid bills, being the most entertaining guest at dinner, deconstructing poetry. It was never home for the dog Emily craved.

Emily shared the lively chaos with her beloved older sister, Rachael, her rock. Over the years the sisters' bond grew ever closer. As Rachael went on to have the cosy family and treasured dog, Giggle, Emily threw herself into unsettled adventure - dog ownership remaining a distant dream.

Then, tragically, Rachael is diagnosed with cancer. In just three devastating years Emily loses not only her sister but both her parents as well.

This is the funny, heartbreaking, wonderfully told story of how Emily discovers that it is possible to overcome the worst that life can throw at you, that it's never too late to make peace with your past and that the right time is only ever now, as she finally starts again with her very own dog - the adorable shih-tzu named Raymond.

I remember a Monty Python book in which they themselves had written a review - "Funny compassionate and highly moving, in this case that description really does apply. E D deals with some very traumatic life events with a light touch and never descends into pathos, but still manages to convey the depth of emotion and loss she feels. A great listen highly recommended.

Thanks for telling your story Emily. I can’t tell you how many coincidences and comparisons I made from my life and my sister to yours. Your story has helped me gain some perspective so thank you.

I felt like Emily was writing about my life. The loss of her dear sister, her upbringing down to the eccentricity of her mother. I totally related to this heartbreaking account of her life. Thank you

Superbly written book

I was unsure about this book when I first saw it , but having listened to Emily Dean on the Frank Skinner podcast decided to take a chance and it did not disappoint. So surprised with the story that was unfolded, cried, laughed, mouth open even. The unusual parenting skills(notes of wisdom) ,some hurtful comments and living life in her sisters shadow, although so much love for each other, but most surprising is how the family is a comparison to “ a dog family”. I would urge anyone to buy and read this book to the insight of a strange yet moving family life. Well written and narrated as if reliving all over again, well done Emily

Surprised , great autobiography
