Summary

Elantris was built on magic, and it thrived. But then the magic began to fade, and Elantris began to rot. Now its shattered citizens face domination by a powerful Imperium. Can a young Princess unite the people of Elantris and lead a rebellion against the imperial zealots?

Brandon Sanderson's debut fantasy showed his skill as a storyteller and an imaginer of baroque magical systems to be fully developed from the start.

I had never heard of Brandon Sanderson until I downloaded this and it was not what I expected from looking at the front cover but wow what a book. The story moves along nicely and the narrative is exellently done. I found myself looking forward to getting some free time just to get back to the book. One of the best stories I have had the pleasure of reading (listening to).

This narrator isn't a good actor. The dialog of a lot of the characters is delivered like they are caricatures in a comedy sketch, or in a cartoon for young children. The delivery really dragged down Sanderson's writing for me, and I couldn't take lot of scenes and characters seriously, even when they were clearly meant to be serious and dramatic.

I gave it a good shot, but at about five chapters in it really started distracting me, and I started relistening the first chapters of the dramatized version by Graphic Audio. I don't usually listen to audio dramas, so it takes me a little getting used to, but despite that the experience was SO MUCH better!

Characters that were annoying and scenes that felt like a slog are now actually gripping and interesting. And a lot of the problems that I thought were faults in the writing don't really bother me anymore now that it's read in voices that I like listening to. So in the end I got a refund for this audiobook and switched over to the Graphic Audio version.

As of writing this, the first third of the "Dramatized Adaption" version is available for free with your Audible subscription, so I'd say try that one first. If you like it, you can get the full book for a single credit. If the dramatic music and sound effects are too distracting for you, either switch to print/ebook, or give this one a shot anyway. I hope the narrator will be less distracting for you than it was for me.

Some character voices are very bad

Yet another great novel from Brandon, although it is quite short. This is definitely a series I will be looking for a sequel to in the future. When you think you start to understand the situation, the plot twists around and leaves you thinking about the transition from understanding to not even knowing what just happened. Overall a perfect 5 stars!
Hope you try Elantris out for yourself.
