Summary
The apocalypse will be televised!
A man. His ex-girlfriend's cat. A sadistic game show unlike anything in the universe: a dungeon crawl where survival depends on killing your prey in the most entertaining way possible.
In a flash, every human-erected construction on Earth - from Buckingham Palace to the tiniest of sheds - collapses in a heap, sinking into the ground.
The buildings and all the people inside have all been atomized and transformed into the dungeon: an 18-level labyrinth filled with traps, monsters, and loot. A dungeon so enormous, it circles the entire globe.
Only a few dare venture inside. But once you're in, you can't get out. And what's worse, each level has a time limit. You have but days to find a staircase to the next level down, or it's game over. In this game, it's not about your strength or your dexterity. It's about your followers, your views. Your clout. It's about building an audience and killing those goblins with style.
You can't just survive here. You gotta survive big.
You gotta fight with vigor, with excitement. You gotta make them stand up and cheer. And if you do have that "it" factor, you may just find yourself with a following. That's the only way to truly survive in this game - with the help of the loot boxes dropped upon you by the generous benefactors watching from across the galaxy.
They call it Dungeon Crawler World. But for Carl, it's anything but a game.

Mr. Dinniman has raised the bar for LitRPG, and this is now one of the series by which I judge all others in the genre.
I've listened to the first 4 books twice within a couple of months.

The genre is something I should love. I’m a gamer have been for years and rpgs are one of my favourites to spend a night on however litrpg tales seem to be catered for a particular type of gamer. Those who are more interested in the mechanics and class build side of things as oppose to story or just taking on baddies. Its less about heroes facing challenges and developing their character and really about how the protagonist can one hit take down the end boss because they found an exploit.
Dungeon Crawler Carl is more than that. The main character isn’t so into video games that he immediately figures out how everything works and become the god of the system. He struggles and has to work hard to get strong to move on to bigger challenges. Theres also real stakes at play both large and personal for Carl as opposed to the usual litrpg fare of ‘get good at game’ and thats it. Things matter. Characters matter. Events take place that change are characters moving forward. And most importantly there is actually a plot! That seems rare with this genre.
I know it sounds like I’m just beating down on the genre and I don’t mean to upset anyone who likes those type of stories but I’m genuinely surprised by how different this book is.
So from someone who doesnt think much for litrpg this is a winner and that goes for the whole series so far.

Funny book that filled a hole left after finishing magic 2.0 series, nothing too serious but it went really really fast, if you like game style books then it's probably going to be on your list anyway so what are you waiting for??!
