About this listen

INSTANT NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER

A fascinating and enlightening deep dive into the infamous Disney Adult community from the woman behind the popular website The Disney Food Blog.

Disney Adults are grown-ups who derive singular, almost obsessive, joy from all things Disney. They devote countless hours and millions of dollars to Disney offerings, whether or not they have children. They’re avid fans of the films, devotees of the Disney theme parks, collectors of the vast world of Disney merchandise, cosplayers who dress in clothing inspired by Disney characters.

Their ranks are so large and their cultural impact so distinct that they have their own moniker and are an economic force unto themselves. They’re often maligned in the larger culture and put on a particularly high pedestal of cringe. But in truth, their obsessive fandom hints at a universal desire for pleasure and joy, for magic and escape.

There are darker sides to Disney mania that can’t be ignored, but the ranks of the Disney Adult community are broad, deep, and ever-growing. Disney Adults are a telling microcosm of modern America, highlighting the value we place on magic and escapism, and what we deem to be “acceptable” sources of joy.

Disney Adults dives deep into a misunderstood subculture, exploring the lives and experiences of a fascinating community to better understand its devotees’ unwavering passion for all things Disney, why it offends, and why it matters.

I would listen to AJ read a shopping list, she has such an engaging manner and charming voice, and to listen to her read her book is a real treat. I found her book to be a fascinating examination of this thing we call the Disney Adult, and she takes us through its inception to its idiosyncrasies to its cultural context and impact on the Disney company itself. At times fun and lighthearted, and at times serious, she doesn’t hold back talking about her own experience of being a Disney Adult, warts and all. She also dives into the dark underbelly of fandom and obsession. She studied psychology in college so perhaps this lent itself to finding just the right person (a psychiatrist) to shed light on the phenomenon. She also dissects the Disney brand and business model, getting into D23, Bob Iger and Bob “Paycheck” and Disney pricing structure, Disney deals and how Disney impacts our daily lives whether we want it to or not. She goes into social media, Mad King George… I mean she covers a lot! I couldn’t put the book down. Please write another one, AJ! Absolutely brilliant. She helped me understand my own love of Disney (as well as reminded me to enjoy it but keep a close eye on my choices regarding it going forward).

A fascinating psychological and cultural analysis of Disney Adults but also fandom in general

Not the book you think it is.
This a wonderful examination of fan culture focused on a particular fandom. How society reacts to it, how it is influenced by the object of its fandom & how the fandom influences the company itself. Brilliantly researched, and written.

Not the book I expected.
