This is the strange and fascinating life of Erwin Rommel, from his days as a youth in Imperial Germany - when he had a child out of wedlock with an early girlfriend - through his lauded military exploits during World War I to his death by suicide during World War II, after he attempted a failed coup against Hitler.

Rommel was a man of contradictions: a soldier who wrote a best-selling book about World War I, a commander who went from commanding Hitler's bodyguard to trying to kill him, and a serious military mind who was known for participating in practical jokes.

In Desert Fox, author Samuel Mitcham (Bust Hell Wide Open) confronts the truth about Rommel and takes a close look at his military actions and reflections.

The book shows the human aspect of Rommel,
probably one of the best war Generals ever. The narration is superb as well.

A real gentleman of war

As a historical book it was interesting and captive. I really enjoyed listening to this story about history gone bye.

Very good listen and brought the story to life.

I debated for some time before downloading this as my father was involved (as a teenage squaddie) in D-day, and subsequently the defence of Caen. It seemed somehow disloyal, but having taken the plunge I’m glad I did. This is a fascinating story, read really well. Rommel was the ultimate professional soldier and very good at his job, although obviously not without his flaws. Give it a try, to get a different perspective on the Allied victory - and for confirmation that Hitler and his inner circle were every bit as terrible as history portrays them to be.

An interesting biography that needs a touch of "bear with it" hear and there.
Some chapters are captivating and thrilling, others less so but it's worth sticking with it as overall a very decent bio.
Written by an American author it unusually gives reasonable credence to the presence of other countries involvement in WW" and manages to NOT give the usual impression that the USA was the only party involved and saved the world blah blah blah.....
That said it's a bit annoying to hear a British narrator using phrases like "chewed him out" and "gotten" so regularly.
Nevertheless, a good read.
