The discovery of a woman's body and a link to the events of 9/11 takes Detective Superintendent Roy Grace around the world in Dead Man's Footsteps. By award winning crime author Peter James, read by Daniel Weyman (Silent Witness, The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power).

Amid the tragic mayhem of the morning of 9/11, failed Brighton businessman and ne'er-do-well Ronnie Wilson sees the chance of a lifeline: to shed his debts, disappear and reinvent himself in another country.

Six years later the discovery of the skeletal remains of a woman's body in a storm drain in Brighton leads Roy Grace on an enquiry spanning the globe, and into a desperate race against time to save the life of a woman being hunted down like an animal in the streets and alleys of Brighton.

Although the Roy Grace novels can be enjoyed in any order, Dead Man's Footsteps is the fourth gripping title in the bestselling series. Enjoy more of the Brighton detective’s investigations with Dead Tomorrow and Dead Like You.

Critic reviews

Tense, beautifully paced and excellent on police atmosphere and procedure.
A real page-turner and the cliffhanging conclusion left me eagerly awaiting DS Grace's next outing.

My husband didn’t like the TV series for some reason so I started the audio series instead. So glad I did because I think you get mute of the characters from the books, which are very well written and read. This one has a particularly clever plot line too.

My new favourite series

Fantastic story. Good characterisation. Lots of twists and turns. Because I am retired and partially disabled I spent most of each day
listening because I wanted to know what happened next.. Brilliant reader. Good at accents and voices with a nice own voice to listen to.

Another brilliant book by Peter James.

I’m not a massive fan of jumping around years, back and forth. But that’s a tiny criticism for another cracker in the series

Enjoyed it first and foremost

It is a masterclass in crime fiction! With meticulous plotting, relentless pacing, and a protagonist who continues to evolve in fascinating ways, this novel grips you from the very first page—or in this case, from the very first spoken word.

Peter James once again proves why he’s one of the giants of the genre. His ability to intertwine multiple timelines and complex story threads with clarity and precision is nothing short of brilliant. The backdrop of the 9/11 attacks lends the story a sobering resonance, and the moral ambiguity at its core keeps the tension high throughout. Grace’s dogged determination and emotional depth make him one of the most compelling detectives in modern fiction.

Special praise must also go to Daniel Weyman, whose narration of the audiobook version brings an added layer of immersion to the experience. Weyman’s ability to differentiate characters, convey suspense, and embody Grace’s thoughtful, grounded persona is outstanding. His performance turns an already superb novel into a fully cinematic experience for the ears.

In short, Dead Man’s Footsteps is everything you want in a crime thriller: intelligent, gripping, and emotionally rich. Peter James and Daniel Weyman make a phenomenal team—and this audiobook is not to be missed.

A masterpiece!
