Libby Day was just seven years old when her older brother massacred her family while she hid in a cupboard. Her evidence helped put him away. Ever since then she has been drifting, surviving for over 20 years on the proceeds of the 'Libby Day fund'. But now the money is running out and Libby is desperate. When she is offered $500 to do a guest appearance, she feels she has to accept. But this is no ordinary gathering. The Kill Club is a group of true-crime obsessives who share information on notorious murders, and they think her brother Ben is innocent.
Ben was a social misfit, ground down by the small-town farming community in which he lived. But he did have a girlfriend - a brooding heavy metal fan called Diondra. Through her, Ben became involved with drugs and the dark arts. When the town suddenly turned against him, his thoughts turned black. But was he capable of murder? Libby must delve into her family's past to uncover the truth - no matter how painful...©2009 Gillian Flynn

Gillian Flynn is the real deal, a sharp, acerbic, and compelling storyteller with a knack for the macabre
Gillian Flynn's writing is compulsively good. I would rather read her than just about any other crime writer
With her blistering debut Sharp Objects, Gillian Flynn hit the ground running. Dark Places demonstrates that was no fluke
Dark Places grips you from the first page and doesn't let go
Flynn's second novel is a wonderful evocation of drab small-town life. The time-split narrative works superbly and the atmosphere is eerily macabre-Dark Places is even better than the author's award-winning Sharp Objects.
This is only Flynn's second crime novel . . . and demonstrates even more forcibly her precocious writing ability and talent for the macabre
Dark Places, Flynn's second novel, confirms her exceptional talent
Gutsy, atmospheric and suspense-loaded
Flynn's well-paced story deftly shows the fallibility of memory and the lies a child tells herself to get through a trauma.
Gillian flynn seems to get the emotions and emotional responses of people reading very well indeed and as a writer that is not an easy thing to do.
The narration is great and Ms King always seems to get it just right, she is an excellent voice actress and I have never heard a bad performance from her.
Please take the time to read or listen to this great work of fiction as it will keep you guessing until the very end. x
Great listen and beautifully narrated.

Any additional comments?
This is a powerfully written murder mystery in keeping with Gillian Flynn's other two books. Positively gruesome at times and always dark, it is not for the faint hearted. None of the characters are particularly likeable, but they seem very real and are understandable (insofar as how they have become what they have become). Lorelei King's narration was perfect and never distracted for a moment (a common problem with audio books).Excellent!

Anyway the audiobook itself was excellent. I was a bit concerned I'd be disappointed having enjoyed Go Girl so much and relatively recently, but on the basis of another review i took my chance. I wasn't disappointed, this is a very different story and didn't feel repetitive at all. The story is excellent and the narration was perfect. Certainly in my top 3 audiobooks of all time. Only problem was it's taken me a while to download another audiobook as I know it will be a disappointment after Dark Places.
Excellent
