The peaceful Eldarin were the last of three ancient races. The mystical Oltor, healers and poets, had fallen before the dread power of the cruel and sadistic Daroth. Yet in one awesome night, the invincible Daroth had vanished from the face of the earth. Gone were their cities, their armies, their terror. The Great Northern Desert was their only legacy. Not a trace remained for a thousand years....

The War of the Pearl had raged for seven years, and the armies of the four Duchies were exhausted and weary of bloodshed. But the foremost of the Dukes, Sirano of Romark, possessed the Eldarin Pearl and was determined to unravel its secrets.

Then, on one unforgettable day, a dark moon rose above the Great Northern Desert, and a black tidal wave swept across the land. In moments the desert had vanished beneath lush fields and forests, and a great city could be seen glittering in the morning sunlight. From this city reemerged the blood-hungry Daroth, powerful and immortal, immune to spear and sword. They had only one desire: to rid the world of humankind forever. Now the fate of the human race rests on the talents of three heroes: Karis, warrior woman and strategist; Tarantio, the deadliest swordsman of the age; and Duvodas the Healer, who will learn a terrible truth.

Good plot, interesting characters. But the reader's constant mistakes with pronunciation - and more importantly, stress and intonation, which affect meaning badly in a number of places - came very close to ruining it.

Good read but poor voice acting

it's a good book I've read many times so was pleased to have it read to me while I potter around the house on lockdown. but the guy reading the story brings almost no life to it and it made it very hard to enjoy. I'll read the book again next time I want to enjoy the story.

ps don't let that put you off gemmel books as a lot of them are amazing and narrated really well, just not this one unfortunately.

great story, but not a great narration

This is one of my favourite stories by David Gemmell, unfortunately the audio version falls very short in its delivery of a few things, character intonation, mispronounced words and just a feeling of lack lustre effort from the narrator. Maybe I'm just spoilt by the likes of Sean Barrett when it comes to emotional listening. If this was anyone's introduction to the writings of Gemmell, please try one of his other books.

One of my favourite stories..... Although.

First of all, this story is amazing!
Secondly, avoid the audiobook if you want the best experience.

I was reading the kindle version of this book when I thought I would try out whisper-sync and listen along to help read faster... waste of money. The narrator does an awful job with names and some other pronunciations. They don't sound like they are into it at all and it was really hard to pay attention. In the end I ditched the audiobook and read the story solely through eBook.

I highly recommend the story and the book, Wonderful tale with some interesting ideas and characters.
Would strongly advise against purchasing this audiobook though. What a shame.

Great story let down by poor narration.

The book was very enjoyable. The reader was terrible. He mispronounced many common English words which lifted listener out of the story, also his characterisation was very poor, making most of the characters sound alike.

Good book, poor narrator!
