Summary

Once upon a time, not so long ago, a monster came to the small town of Castle Rock, Maine . . . He was not a werewolf, vampire, ghoul, or unnameable creature from the enchanted forest or snow wastes; he was only a cop . . .

Cujo is a huge Saint Bernard dog, the best friend Brett Camber has ever had. Then one day Cujo chases a rabbit into a bolt-hole. Except it isn't a rabbit warren any more. It is a cave inhabited by rabid bats.

And Cujo falls sick. Very sick. And the gentle giant who once protected the family becomes a vortex of horror inexorably drawing in all the people around him . . .

Critic reviews

Not since Dickens has a writer had so many readers by the throat
King at his best . . . a winner!
King is unbeatable

Good story but irritating narration. Voices all seem to degenerate to croaky, whiny frogs at moments of tension

Irritating voices

Prefer, other of Stephen King's work, which I found, holds the interest, throughout and keeps pace.

Cujo I found, is quite padded out, with side detail, that for me, didn't benefit to its appeal.
So the pace, kept slowing. I found this lost my attention.

Also find other narrator's, easier to listen to.
Probably something individual, for us all. Other narrator's voices, and style, draw a person in. This one, didn't work, so well for me.

I think this is all, personal preference though.
Others may feel very differently.

Brilliant core storyline, pace keeps slowing.

Another King novel that had me gripped, specifically the ‘Ford Pinto vs Dog’ scene, which was by far the most enticing part of the story. Good character development and sub-plot building - the various background stories somewhat leading to the fate of certain people! The deaths were gruesome (one of which caught me completely off guard) and I think the portrayal of a family Dog, becoming a possessed, frightening serial killer, was done successfully. Not my favourite King plot (stiff competition) but still an enjoyable read.

The Fear Of The Dog …..

The story itself is a classic for a reason; fantastic, horrifying and genuinely sad. The narrator made some strange choices though. She seems to give Cujo the voice of an old evil witch and all the men in the story the voice of Kermit the frog. Quite distracting

Gripping story, unusual narration

The 4 yrs old’s voice truly made me side with Cujo for a few chapters.
