Summary

Sometimes one moment defines a man.

For homicide detective Mac, it's been a good year. Having Tony to go home to makes him a better cop and a better person. For Tony, it's been hard being in love with a man he can't touch in public. Evasions and outright lying to friends and family take a little of the shine off his relationship with Mac, but Tony is determined to make it work.

As the Minneapolis Police Department moves into a hot, humid summer, Mac is faced with a different challenge. A killer has murdered two blond women, and the police have no real clues. Mac hates to think that another murder may be the only way they'll make progress with the case. But when that murder happens, it hits close to home for Tony. And suddenly Mac faces an ultimatum: Come out into the sunlight and stand beside Tony as his lover, or walk away and live without a piece of his heart.

Another great story about Mac and Tony!! The story begins the summer after the two first meet. They are now in a committed relationship but Mac is still in the closet which brings with it frustrations for Tony.

When the mother of Tony's charge, Ben, is murdered things take a drastic change in the relationship between Tony and Mac. Being in the closet is no longer a possibility with Tony fighting for custody of Ben. Mac will have to come out or give up Tony.

The narrator did an amazing job and made the book go fast. It was difficult to put down once I started.

The story continues 🌟

Another good narration from Mr Harding. Great choice for narrator of this series. Most things he does are top notch, and he features quite a few times on my Awesome Audio narration shelf here on Goodreads.

***Book Review 2013***

For me, a big improvement on the first book of the series, 4.5 stars from me.

The writing was certainly more assured in this book, the characters more rounded and the plot once again was really good. Tony was his usual calm and collected self, strong, helpful, kind and without a doubt head-over-heels in love with Mac. Mac, on the other hand, was still having problems with coming out of that bl**dy closet, and when he discovered that one of the murders he was investigating involved the mother of Tony's godson Ben, it became personal. Family problems ensued and Tony was left trying to justify his attachment to Ben and being challenged by Ben's grandparents.

Eventually, Mac came through for Tony and went to court stating that Tony was a 'fit and proper' person and ought to be allowed to adopt Ben, and 'outted' himself by admitting that he was Tony's boyfriend, but that they'd split because Tony wanted to do everything 'by the book' for Ben, and his own reluctance to come out of the closet.....of course, everyone would now know (including a few of Mac's bigoted colleagues) that he was gay.

In the background of course, we had the murderer and the on-going investigation into who he was, where he was and how the cops could catch him. A lot of Mac's legwork paid off and the net was closing in around the culprit...they found out who he was, and were playing catch-up as to where he was staying until they got a break....Enjoy!!

This series and JF Harding? Match made in heaven..

This is a continuing story with Mac and Tony’s. These guys are both so likable. Their dealing with daily issues it is so easy to picture. Mac and Tony are somewhat together until there is a problem with Ben. A situation happens that causes Tony to have to examine his lifestyle and Ben’s future. This causes a bump in the road of their relationship. Meanwhile Mac is busy trying to find a serial killer. He is still not out. He has this sort of fear of what will happen at his job and what will happen with his daughter’s aunt. Brenda, Anna’s aunt has watched Anna for years while Mac works. Brenda is a strictly religious person who doesn’t like Mac without knowing about him being gay.
As Tony and Mac resolve their situation Mac is forced to deal with the killer and Brenda. He has sort of partially come out. Standing up for Tony makes their relationship known only to a few. A few always means the word spreads and Mac has to deal with the “rumors” that he is gay.
I feel this author has an exceptional way of making the characters believable and the situations so true to life. The emotions and the events are so well described that I could not help but be anxious and heart warmed by them. I’m looking forward to the next book in the series.

A continuation

...but honest, and dives into what is probably the reality of many police officers lives. There is a lot of homophobia, vile words and at times it seems like neither Mac or Tony are ever going to get a break.

I found the story, especially Ben's heartbreaking. The case is thrilling but tragic, less suspenseful mystery more horrific serial killer but I was fully captured by these characters and their little make shift family that I need to know what happens next. I can only hope their story improves!
