It's August 1998 in the town of Meridian, Nevada, and Luna is working the night shift at the county dispatch center. A call comes in from a payphone outside a roadside motel — a woman's voice, calm at first, then fraying. She says the ice machine in the parking lot has been running for three days straight, even after the motel manager unplugged it. Luna listens as the woman describes the sound: a low grinding, like teeth on metal, and something else — a voice buried in the machinery, reciting numbers in a language she doesn't recognize.
