This is the story of a hairbrush that belonged to my great-grandmother, and the night I learned why my mother kept it locked in a cedar chest in the attic. The brush was rosewood with silver bristles, and whenever I touched it, I saw a woman in a green dress standing at the edge of the pecan grove.
