Summary

It's late October, 1998, in the small town of Millbrook, Maine. The Cross estate sale is held in a gray colonial house with a wraparound porch. Among the usual detritus of a long life, there's a hand-carved walking cane made of dogwood, with a twisted handle and a brass ferrule. The price tag says $15. But the cane doesn't want to be sold—it wants to be taken. Luna encounters a woman named Margaret who once lived next door to the Crosses, and who warns her about the cane's history. She says it belonged to Mr. Cross's brother, a man who walked the woods at night and whose footsteps never sounded quite right. Luna buys it anyway, and on the drive home, she hears a rhythm in the trunk—tap, drag, tap, drag—and the rearview mirror shows a dark shape sitting upright on the folded-down back seat.
