Summary

In October 1998, Luna's aunt sends her to Ellsworth Falls, South Dakota, to retrieve a porcelain lamp from a reclusive woman named Edith Parrish. The lamp is said to be a family heirloom, but when Luna arrives at the crumbling Victorian house on the edge of town, she finds Edith sitting in the dark with the lamp unlit. Edith tells her the lamp doesn't need to be plugged in—it glows on its own. As dusk falls, Luna watches the lamp begin to pulse with a sickly amber light, and hears a faint, rhythmic scratching from inside the shade. Edith's face is lit from below, her eyes unmoving. The lamp, she says, only lights when it's hungry. Luna leaves with the lamp, but on the drive home, she notices the light pulsing in the back seat. She hasn't plugged it in.
