About this listen

📖 Written by The Twisted Realms:

A Slavic-inspired marsh kingdom worships rust-eaten idols that “drink” plagues from the people in exchange for yearly sacrifices. When the latest plague refuses to be consumed and instead infects the saints themselves, a reluctant novice must trek through haunted bogs to find the first idol and learn what happens when a god dies sick.

In Black Mire, salvation is paid in iron, not blood. Every year the marshfolk drag their rusted ploughs, broken swords, chains and shackles to the village idols—towering, pitted effigies called the Rust Saints. The ritual is simple: the sick press their lesions, boils and rashes against the saint’s corroded flanks while priests heap the iron offerings at its feet. The idol “drinks” the plague, the sores fade, and the sacrificed metal vanishes overnight, absorbed into the saint’s body. Over generations, this has slowly stripped the kingdom of weapons and tools, while the saints have grown swollen with a ghostly armory of remembered violence: every confiscated sword, every prison shackle, every nail from a rebel’s coffin.

But when the new plague comes, the ritual goes wrong. At one village rite, the people line up as always, smearing their sickness onto the saint’s torso. Instead of vanishing, their lesions bloom back across the metal, blooming like rust-flowers, and then drip off into the marsh. The idol’s surface splits and oozes; its carved eyes weep orange streams. Soon, many saints begin to cough back the illnesses they once consumed. Their iron bodies seize, twist, and animate in feverish convulsions. The Rust Saints themselves are now infected—half-delirious gods lashing out through storms of razor flaking rust, waking hallucinations in the minds of their worshippers, and “miracles” that spread disease instead of curing it.
