About this listen

The best-selling author of The Martian returns with an irresistible new near-future thriller - a heist story set on the moon.

Jazz Bashara is a criminal. Well, sort of. Life on Artemis, the first and only city on the moon, is tough if you're not a rich tourist or an eccentric billionaire. So smuggling in the occasional harmless bit of contraband barely counts, right? Not when you've got debts to pay and your job as a porter barely covers the rent.

Everything changes when Jazz sees the chance to commit the perfect crime, with a reward too lucrative to turn down. But pulling off the impossible is just the start of her problems, as she learns that she's stepped square into a conspiracy for control of Artemis itself - and that now her only chance at survival lies in a gambit even riskier than the first.

Bringing to life Weir's brash, whip-smart protagonist is actress Rosario Dawson (Marvel's The Defenders, Sin City, Death Proof). With the breathless immediacy of one realizing they're one cracked helmet visor away from oblivion, Dawson deftly captures Jazz's first-person perspective – all while delivering sarcastic Weir-ian one-liners and cracking wise in the face of death. And with a cast of diverse characters from all walks of life calling Artemis home, Dawson tonally somersaults to voice Kenyan prime ministers, Ukrainian scientists, and Saudi welders. It's a performance that transports listeners right alongside Jazz, matching her step for step on every lunar inch of her pulse-pounding journey.

Jazz Bashara is a character that is not afraid to guide its audience and explain what is happening while living a very unorthodox life in low gravity but full throttle, all the main characters in the story are female and strong, the men are secondary but well described and instrumental to the story, also there is one Canadian and some one American tourist with one line but the rest of the cast is from countries not commonly mentioned in bestsellers except as cannon fodder or evil villans; very refreshing because Andy Weir humanises them and even makes them humorous.
A good plot with a very likeable character and cast that runs like clockwork and entertains while keeping you interested in what is an alien environment.
This book is a good read for anyone even those that don't enjoy science fiction because it is a character-driven plot and the environment is explained with ease and in what a pear to be a very natural way.

A Woman antihero to love

A light and fun listen. A slightly kitsch action packed detective adventure novel. Incomparable to the Martian. I enjoyed the narration and the fast paced story line.
A perfect throw away after you have finished book for a long journey or a listen by the pool on holiday.

Not the Martian

Really enjoyed listening to this book. The author has maintained the same level of detail as he did with the Martian with another great story underpinning all the technical delights. Also really enjoyed the narration one of the best audiobooks I’ve listened to. And I’ve listened to a lot.

Great listen.

I loved Andys other books, but this one was a bit boring to be honest. I listened to it, but felt no connection to the characters at all. Narration was OK, but not enough to save it.

Narration 9/10
Thank god for the narration because it's actually the only redeeming fact about this Audiobook. Rosario Dawson does a really good job here, bringing the protagonist to life as well as the rest of the characters, soulless though they be. If it wasn't for the narration I might have returned this without finishing it.

Story 5/10
My expectation for this were pretty high. Having read The Martian I expected a lot from Andy Weir and the reviews, though a bit mixed, were overall really positive to justify buying the Audiobook. Unfortunately, this is worlds apart in quality compared to The Martian.
Sooo, we mostly see the story via the one dimensional and totally uninteresting female character Jazz, who works as a smuggler at the only human city on the Moon called Artemis. She picks up a different job for a big payment not knowing what she's getting herself into and that's where everything will start going wrong.
From the beginning to the end I did not care at all about Jazz, I just found her annoying and the writer failed to make me feel anything for her. As if that was not enough, the rest of the characters are pretty much non existent, it's as if everything is about Jazz and everyone else is there just to assist in propelling her story forward. As if that wasn't enough, the whole story is also uninteresting and uninspiring. There was actually no point whatsoever that picked my interest and kept me hooked.

Overall if I could describe this with one word, that would be disappointing. I would not recommend this to anyone, especially for fans of The Martian. It's as if the 2 books were written from a totally different writer.

Undewhelming, especially when compared to Martian
