I’ve read all of Allports books on the Second World War and cannot recommend them highly enough. The author never loses sight of the human cost of the conflict and the diary entries, letters and mass observation references really bring to life what those who endured thought and felt. This two part volume is absolutely essential reading/listening.

Quick note as well to say it’s brilliantly read and the narrators delivery really brings to life the huge cast of complex and often contradictory characters.

The book is pretty good, decent detail and options.
But the narration is awful. The stereotype accents means it’s hard to take the content seriously. Even the standard Churchill sounds like Alan Bennett.
