Summary

'[An] absolute corker from Ireland's best mystery writer ... utterly gripping' Express

The players call it The Game. There are just two rules:
No killing close to home.
No Killing outside the game

But what happens when those rules get broken?

When the drowned body of a troubled teenager is recovered from a river in Maine's Kennebec Valley, and a young woman disappears from a small rural town, they draw the attention of the private investigator named Charlie Parker.

Now Parker will be forced to confront a band of men without morality and without loyalty, not even to one another, in a place where the very darkness is alive.

Because something has emerged from the shadows, something very bad.

And it wants revenge.©2026 Bad Dog Books Limited (P)2026 Simon & Schuster Audio

Wow! John Connolly brings it again. A superb, gritty, and well written book. I find myself wanting more but I can feel the end of the tale approaching. What a saga ... can't wait for the next installment.

Another brilliant book from John Connolly

Loved it. The stories are good but it’s the supernatural elements that have me absolutely hooked.

Another belter from JC! I finished this book on the day it arrived in my library, despite lying to myself about making it last.

All the characters we've grown to love, Moxie Costin, Louis & Angel, the Fulci bros, Mrs. Bondarchuk & her pomeranians and the reappearance of psychic and fish-fancier, Sabine Drew....all make this novel un-put-downable.

I'm not even going to say what it's all about - you'll just have to listen & find out for yourself.

Jeff Harding's narration is, as always, perfect!

Chilling, gripping, amusing and compulsively addictive

I absolutely loved this installment. It’s possibly one of my favourites. It had everything I love about the Charlie Parker novels and ALL of my favourite characters. It was a tiny bit of a hard listen at times but worded perfectly and without the very worst in the world there would be no need for Charlie Parker. I take my hat off to you John!!

An excellent story.

Loved this. The story was excellent, really gripping and all the main characters featured in some way. It subtly reminds us that Charlie & friends are growing older but they still have the instinct for survival and eliminating the bad. Really enjoyed this read. After Children of Eve I was worried the Parker series had gone off the boil, I didn't think it was on par with the previous books in the series. But in this latest Charlie Parker is back with a bang. Well done John Connolly and I really enjoyed the narrator. Jeff is excellent at bringing the story and individuals to life through his narration.

Back to his best!
