High adventure and dark mystery combine in this sparkling historical romance from the internationally bestselling author of the Chronicles of St Mary's series.

Elinor Bascombe, widowed and tied to an impoverished estate, has learned to ask little of life. With no hope of leaving, the years have passed her by.

Lord Ryde, exiled abroad after a scandal, has returned to strip his estate and make a new start in America.

A chance encounter changes their plans, plunging Elinor and Lord Ryde into adventure and not a little peril until, finally, they are forced to confront the mystery of what happened on That Night, all those years ago.

Are they both so entangled in the riddles of the past that they are about to miss this one last opportunity for future happiness?

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

I would recommend this, with reservations, to a friend who wasn't too particular about her reading. I would describe it as fun but clumsy. It is certainly not up to Georgette Heyer's usual standard (though she fell from it herself on occasion) - I am genuinely taken aback at how many Heyer fans have endorsed it. It has an unnecessary amount of tedious and poorly written (and unfortunately simultaneous) sex and amateur psychology, neither of which adds anything to the narrative. The performance of Anna Bentinck was, however, terrific.

Excellent performance. Just-okay novel.

Enjoyed this but was fairly predictable. Why was it written by Jodie Taylor but writing as Isabella Barclay?? Cannot imagine Isabella writing anything like this book.

Loved all St Mary's books and will listen to all again.,but not this one, too Mills and boon for me. Plus by the end the narration was starting to really irratate not enough variation for so many male characters.

Where does A Bachelor Establishment rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

This is a well written romance. The characters despite being somewhat stereotypical of the genre are engaging. There are enough plot twists and turns to make the story interesting.

Delightful, well written beautifully performed drama romance. What a lovely surprize this book has been. From the other comments I wasn't quite sure, but the reference to Ms Heyer won the day and I set my horse to jump the hedge to join Mrs Elinor Dascombe in this romp.

Jack/John is wallowing in his straightened circumstances, until the Dascombe entourage descends on him. This tale is so full of humour and laugh out loud events it is guaranteed to cheer up even the wettest day. The period style of the prose is a delight, even though only one bodice was removed in the course of the action.

The narrator put the icing on the cake. Her pace and style really make this a well above offering from Audible. I will certainly check out other books by this author and narrator (whom I stumbled on looking for something else entirely).
