Ever promised "never again" after a hangover — only to find yourself drinking again the next weekend?

Maybe you've tried moderation. Maybe you've set rules, made bargains, taken breaks, counted drinks, switched drinks, avoided certain nights out — only to end up back in the same familiar loop.

Maybe you don't want to call yourself an alcoholic. Maybe traditional recovery doesn't feel like your world. Maybe you simply know life would be better if alcohol had less control over it.

99% Sober is a practical, honest and relatable guide for anyone who wants to take control of their drinking without shame or labels.

Part memoir, part self-help, Patrick Ruddy shares how he spent over a decade trying to change his own relationship with alcohol through moderation, willpower and attempts at total abstinence — before finding a different way.

The 99% Sober approach is about becoming dry by default: changing your normal so drinking becomes the exception, not the automatic setting.

Inside, you'll explore how to:

  • understand why moderation keeps failing
  • stop bargaining with yourself every weekend
  • handle cravings, social pressure and special occasions
  • rebuild confidence without relying on alcohol
  • improve your health, money, relationships and self-respect by drinking less

This is not a lecture. It is not a demand that you hit rock bottom, join a group, or make sobriety your whole identity.

It is an honest, human and realistic book for anyone who has ever Googled "Do I have a drink problem?" and wished there was an answer that felt practical, hopeful and free from shame.

If you're ready for alcohol to take up less space in your life, 99% Sober will show you where to start.

I enjoyed the style of writing and the openness of the way Paddy portrays his journey. It definitely makes you think about your own relationship with alcohol and gives lots of helpful tools to consider.

I really enjoyed 99% Sober and found it easy to relate to. I think one thing that most who want to give up alcohol fear is the thought of never being able to drink ever again. This book reframes that and makes you think about it differently. I highly recommend this audiobook to anyone considering cutting back on alcohol. 10/10

A book I could really relate to.

I've read "quit-lit" and the like before, but I've never read something this funny, this relatable, and this inspiring.
After a recent health scare I knew I had to adjust my attitude to booze, but after years of living as a student in Scotland and working in offices where nights out were frequent and a stop at the pub on the way home was the norm, I had no idea where to start.
99% Sober has given me the confidence to start anew and take the first, second, and third steps towards a better lifestyle where I feel like I'm the one in control.
I'm three months in to my journey and I can confidently say this was my favourite book of 2024, and I'm really looking forward to more from Patrick in the future!

The honest truth about booze and the experience. With plenty of “yep, been there, done that” moments.

Thought provoking
